This is new. Miho Wada fronts a Japanese Punk Jazz band based in New Zealand and will be headed to SXSW in March.
Wada, it seems, is larger than life. Her new album, Postcards to Your Bed, features Wada scantily clad clutching flutes and saxophones and the cover art reads,”Contains Explicity Lyrics and Japanese Punk Jazz.” Uh…okay.
But inside, this is no joke. Surprisingly quality lounge jazz backed by talented flute jams gave me a double-take. Some of these tracks, particularly “That Major Song,” could easily be background tunes at an art gallery opening.
However, the drawbacks of this album are 1) anytime Wada sings in English or Japanese…oh, and 2) the lyrics.
It’s a Friday night I’m alone at home
drinking vino and playing Nintendo
Money is tight, you’ve spent it all
My friends were right, after all
But hey, it’s my first foray into Japanese Punk Jazz from New Zealand.
Maybe this is Robert Frost meets Jethro Tull, for all I know.
