This is an interview series in preparation for my SXSW Panel: The State of Music Blogs in 2010. I reached out to a number of influencers, musicans, labels, marketers and music fans to get their perspectives on the topic and will be posting these in a series leading up to the conference.
Today we hear from Jora Deziel, public & media relations coordinator for the acoustical marvel known as Xcel Energy Center and the horrendous echo cave known as Roy Wilkins Auditorium.
Why do you think music blogs are so popular?
It lets regular people voice their opinions – people can relate to that and want to support that
How do you think music blogs/aggregators/social networks have impacted the industry?
The easier an artist is to find/learn more about/listen to…the more people will flock to them. People like the inside scoop. If they feel like they have a window into the world of an artist/band, they instantly feel more connected, like they are a part of that world. Venues/Artists/Bands have to be/live virtually transparent.
How have they changed your music consumption and/or marketing efforts?
I listen to online music all day from Pandora. That is where I find new artists to listen to and be inspired by. As for the marketing efforts, we are fully immersed in the social media world. Breaking news now comes from social media. If you want to be on the cutting-edge and stay “newsworthy,” you have to be actively participating – not just a bystander. We use Facebook ads, Twitter contests/campaigns to get folks interested in our facility and bands that are coming to it.
What’s the best thing to happen to the music industry in the last year or so?
Twitter, you feel like you know the artist intimately
What’s the worst?
Twitter, there is no mystery anymore
What is the single biggest strategy/technology/innovation/societal shift you think will impact music in 2010?
Merger between TicketMaster and Live Nation
