Osaka’s Shonen Knife has been around (in various forms) since 1982, releasing 16 albums and building their international street cred. But this seventeenth album is special – it’s in English.
The girl group’s upcoming full length, Free Time is out August 31st on Good Charamel Records.
In my opinion, it’s a gamble. Not that punk lyrics are usually very deep, but these don’t seem very compelling.
Sometimes it’s better when you don’t know what’s being said…But heck, when you’ve got Sonic Youth, Kurt Cobain and countless modern punk bands counting you as key influences, you’ve earned some wiggle room.
Shonen Knife play The Cave in Northfield on September 20. I checked the map, and it’s only 52 minutes from Minneapolis with good traffic.
