Alpenhorns of acid: Swedish psych-rock’s Dungen

Swedish psychedelic rock group Dungen are prepping their sixth album, Skit I Allt for release next week and coming to Minneapolis next month.

I’m a big fan of this band. I saw Dungen live in 2005 and 2007 and just revel in their sound.

With a diverse repertoire segueing from wonder-lush ballads to catchy pop to progged-out psychedelia, watching Dungen’s live set is like sucking down an alpenhorn of acid, eating a full plate of Ikea meatballs, and heading up to Buck Hill to intermittently gaze at the Milky Way and watch the car pile-ups on 35W.

Here’s one of the more restrained . . . → Read More: Alpenhorns of acid: Swedish psych-rock’s Dungen

Instrumental Hip Hop from Doomtree's Paper Tiger

I’m a big fan of instrumental hip-hop, particularly from Minneapolis’ own artists like Big Cats! and this solo debut release from Doomtree producer Paper Tiger called Made Like Us.

Paper Tiger weaves beats, synths and organic elements perfect for blaring out my moon roof while giving the skunk-eye to swagger wagon-driving suburbanites at each and every stoplight. And although it is mostly instrumental, look for guest appearances from Dessa and Maggie Morrison.

Here’s the first single:

Snowmageddon 2009 – will any of us survive?

Last February my friend Doug and I created the “Snowmageddon” Twitter meme over our morning coffee.

The conversation was something like, “People are really freaking out about this storm. Let’s name it and get a top Twitter trend.” Then we laughed. Then we tweeted. Then we blogged. Then we created a logo and live Web cam to help fuel discussion throughout the day.

We can’t take all the credit, of course. The storm itself helped a lot. And the media. And the technology that allows freaked out snowmiacs to connect, collaborate and share. In fact, at one point Twitter users crashed TwitPic with . . . → Read More: Snowmageddon 2009 – will any of us survive?

We Are the Willows' Midwest Song Map

I wrote about the new We Are the Willows debut LP, A Collection Of Sounds And Something Like The Plague back in October, and I’m still digging on it.

Check out this cool map Amble Down sent over:

Recorded in a basement and all over the city of Minneapolis (where Miller currently lives) with nothing more than a laptop and a couple of microphones, A Collection of Sounds And Something Like The Plague is directly constructed from and inspired by the noise of one’s surroundings. Miller captured sounds like the brakes on a train, conversations at a local cafe and stones being . . . → Read More: We Are the Willows' Midwest Song Map
