MP3: The 4onthefloor : “Bricklayer”

The 4onthefloor are four guys in a stompin’ blues band who write all their songs in 4/4 and everyone in the band plays their own kick drums. It’s that simple. The drum thing may read like a gimmick on paper, . . . → Read More: Perfect Porridge 2010 Mixtape Mp3 Download Fiesta Party

Interview with Crystal City

Marshalltown, Iowa folk throwback duo Crystal City recently sent me their debut album, and I can’t stop reaching for it.

With retro harmonies and only an acoustic guitar for instrumentation, Crystal City’s debut album tempers ambitious nu-folk songwriting with their midwestern roots. Love it.

RIYL: The Swell Season, The Civil War, Damien Rice.

Here are a couple tracks off the album:

MP3: Crystal City – “Baby Says She Loves Me”

MP3: Crystal City – “I’ll Be Real Nice”

We had the opportunity to chat with Crystal City’s Sam Drella about the group, the album, and the Marshalltown speedway…

Who is Crystal City? How did the band come about?

New New Monarchs remix track

I’m a big fan of Minneapolis electronic duo The New Monarchs and their latest EP, Electrocaching. Wrote a review and interviewed them back in March.

I got a note about this new remix album that includes a sweet TNM remix.

It’s the first song released from an upcoming all-local remix album, Repeating Equation: Remixes, which is set to be released digitally in July by Soup . . . → Read More: New New Monarchs remix track

Sunday Morning Airport Adventure with Spirituals

My flight to Toronto this morning departs from MSP‘s secret “B” gate.

To get there you go through security, walk down the concourse, board the tram and take it to the last stop, find the hidden down escalators, walk through an underground tunnel, tell today’s password to an angry troll (today’s password is “Esmeralda”), and emerge at a small, death-plane terminal somewhere near Wisconsin.

I showed up way too early today, but not having traveled out of the country much, I wanted to be sure to be too early rather than too late. That’s fine, as it’s given me plenty of time to . . . → Read More: Sunday Morning Airport Adventure with Spirituals
